Port Edward to Port St. Johns
Venture where only a fortunate few have passed. The northern Pondoland
section of the Wild Coast, stretching from Mtamvuna river in the north (Port
Edward) to the mighty Umzimvubu in the south (Port St John's), is undoubtedly
the least accessible, dramatically rugged and breathtakingly pristine section of
the Wild Coast.
Active Escapes offers a number of hiking trails in this region, overnighting in
a combination of private tented camps, holiday cottages, hotel and community
homestays. Our Pondoland Hiking trails range 2 - 10 days. As you make your way
from the grassy plateau traversing rocky headlands and sandy bays, you’ll see
amazing waterfalls, freestanding rock stacks and pristine estuaries on your
journey. The skeletal remains of numerous shipwrecks along the shore bear
testimony to this high-energy coastline, whilst schools of dolphin and whales
are a familiar sight.
Our Pondoland hikes begin either at the Mtamvuna River, Port Edward – the
northern most boundary of Pondoland, or the stunning Msikaba estuary which
borders Mkambati Nature Reserve.

5 Hike Days: Wild Coast Casino (Port Edward) to Mbotyi with Village-Based
Accommodation (VBA)
This is a guided trail in which you’ll stay in a combination of community
homestays / camps, and more upmarket tented camps, with an optional hotel
upgrade on your final night in Mbotyi.
Full or part-catering options are available.
2009 Price: R2,200/pp/sharing – Based on a group of 6 persons.
Includes:
• 4 Nights Accom:
- 2 nights in village based homestays with Dinner, Bed & Breakfast provided (Nyameni
& Mtentu)
- 2 Nights (self-catering) in twin-bed luxury tented camps (ensuite bathrooms) (Msikaba
& Luphuthana)
• Personal Hiking Guide up to Mtentu (thereafter can hire guide if needed)
• 4 x Canoe River Crossings
• Personal Transfers: Drop-off at Wild Coast Casino & Pick-up from Mbotyi – with
3hr transfer back to Port Edward
Pondo-Hopper:
2-3 Hike Days: Msikaba to Mbotyi
For those with time constraints, or who would prefer a higher level of luxury -
this is the hike option for you. All catering & vehicle back-up support can be
provided on this hike.
2009 Price: R2,900/pp/sharing –Based on group of 4 persons
Includes:
• Personal Transfer from Mbotyi to Msikaba
• Accommodation & Meals:
1 Night Full Board at Grosvenor Lodge
1 Night at Luphuthana Camp
1 Night DBB at Mbotyi Hotel

Pondo-Explorer:
5 Hike Days: Msikaba to Port St Johns
This 5 day hike can accommodate both small (minimum 2 pax) & larger parties (up
to 24 persons). Accommodation is in tented camps, all strategically located
close to the coast – either on a beautiful estuary or nestled amongst the
milkwoods behind dunes. Each twin bedded tent has ensuite hot water shower &
toilet, and are under thatched bomas to keep cool even during the hottest summer
months.
The daily hike distances are easily manageable for persons of average fitness
and porters (to assist with your backpack) can also be arranged on request. All
the camps are fully equipped for self-catering with gas plate, fridge &
cutlery/crockery provided. However, catering can be provided for groups of 8
persons or more.
2009 Prices:
R2495/pp: 5 Nights self-catering accom in tented camps + transfer from PSJ
R2795/pp: 4 Nights self-catering tented accom + 1 night at Mbotyi hotel
(upgrade)+ & transfer from PSJ.
2010 Prices:
R2995/pp – 4 Nights self-catering tented accom & 1 night at Mbotyi hotel +
transfer from PSJ.
R3650/pp – Fully catered hike option (only available to groups of 8 persons or
more)
