Experience the essence of Africa with a mountain bike tour on the Wild Side – Eastern Cape’s, Wild Coast. Dramatic cliff faces, jutting headlands, hidden waterfalls and deserted beaches. Kickback under a milkwood tree, explore the rusted remains of the numerous shipwrecks along this shore, or discover the myriad birdlife and pristine estuaries which abound this rugged coastline.

There's no better way to appreciate the diversity of this untamed coast than from the vantage of your saddle, as you wind your way from cliff-top to sandy bay, across grassy plateau and up forested-tracks, passing through rural villages along the way. Experience the warmth of amaXhosa hospitality and get an insight into traditional custom with community and backpacker-stays, or treat yourself to the old-world charm of family hotels along the way.

At over 300km in length, with a labyrinth of coastal and inland trails to chose from, the Wild Coast offers diverse trail riding options. Trips are generally run over full and new moon periods, where we take advantage of the wet hard beaches created by the Spring low tides.

Active Escapes offers a number of MTB tour options along this untamed coastline. Whilst a good measure of fitness and previous mountain bike experience comes recommended, a keen sense of adventure, and an appreciation of nature, is the only qualifier you’ll need to participate in one of our tours.

The traditional Wild Coast Cycle Tour follows the Imana Wild Ride race route from Kei Mouth in the south up to Umngazi or Port St John’s. This 200km race is completed over 4 days, which can be done with fit and experienced groups. However, we tend to trip the route over a more social 6 days, with the second and last day being split into two ride days. We also usually take a well deserved rest-day somewhere enroute to fully appreciate the landscape through which you are passing and re-energize on some of those good pondo vibes.

We offer private tours to groups of 6 persons or more, otherwise keep checking our online events calendar for scheduled tours. Our tours are professionally guided, catered and supported with vehicle back-up, but if you looking to run the trip independently ( without vehicle back-up), we can certainly help out with route advice, accommodation bookings, and end-point transfers.

For those with less mula or min leave, the northern Pondoland section of Wild Coast (Port Edward to Port St John’s) provides a fast-track to these wilder parts. Just 1.5 hrs from Durbs, the organic single-tracks, hard-pack beaches and rolling grasslands of Wild Coast mountain biking mecca, really is just a weekend’s break away.

Wild Coast Cycle Tours are tailored to suit each group’s experience, time &/or financial constraints but some of our Standard 2009 Package Offerings Include:

1. Wild Adventure Challenge: 9 Days / 8 Nights
From Morgans Bay or Kei Mouth – Port St John’s (6 Ride Days / 1 Rest day/ 2 Travel days)

Price: From R4,900/pp – R7,750/pp (Dependent on 1 or 2 Transfers required, & choice of accommodation from backpackers, private holiday cottages & hotel options.)

Standard Package (@ R4,900/pp) Includes:

• 8 Nights accommodation (1 hotel night, 3 backpacker nights, 2 nights community lodge, 1 night nature reserve, 1 night – private holiday chalet)
• All meals
• Services of 2 professional trail guides (On trail & one providing vehicle back-up support)
• Daily luggage transfers & vehicle back-up
• Shuttle service from airport to start point (Kei) and return to airport OR shuttle from vehicle drop-off to start of tour (3-4 hr shuttle)
• All Nature Reserve Permits & Ferry crossings


2. Wild Ride Challenge: 4 days/ 3 Nights
Kei Mouth – Umngazi River Bungalows.
Self-supported tour, but all accommodation & transfers arranged.

Price: From R3,600/pp
Includes:
• 3 nights Hotel Accommodation (Kob Inn, Haven, Ocean View – Coffee Bay)
• All meals during tour (including trail lunches)
• Reserve permits
• Transport to / from East London airport (fly-in packages) or return transfer to start point (vehicles left at Kei Mouth)


3. Pondo Pedal: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Port Edward to Mkambathi & Return

Price: R2,200/pp – Based on a min of 6 pax
Includes:

• 3 Nights accommodation & all meals
• 3 Days professionally guided cycle tour
• Vehicle Back-up support: 4x4 back-up to base camp & return
