BUSH BABIES MONKEY SANCTUARY
Animal Parks / Zoos
in Hartbeespoort & Dam, Eastern Region,
North West, South Africa
Situated west of Hartebeesport Dam, alongside the Elephant sanctuary, it
provides an environment where monkeys (primates) can be given their freedom in a
natural environment. The sanctuary is situated in one of the many Kloofs
(Gorges) of the Magaliesberg mountain range providing the perfect environment
for Monkeys from around the world.
Besides the beautiful setting and educational experience, the Sanctuary provides
an insightful experience into the geological history of the area with a
beautiful view of the Bushveld from atop its property.
Several species of primates are accommodated at the Sanctuary all of which were
once people's pets. They however DO NOT make good pets once adult stages are
reached and can become violent, destructive and uncontrollable. The primates on
site include Spider Monkeys, Lemurs, Bush Babies, Squirrel Monkeys and Capuchin
Monkeys.
The sanctuary is open 7 days a week with tours every hour on the hour starting
at 9:00, with the last tour at 16:00. During a tour, which is highly informative
and interesting, you will join our guides on a walk through natural indigenous
forests on elevated wooden walkways and experience the variety of exotic monkeys
in this exquisite environment.
The experience is described as a non-interactive game-viewing opportunity to see
once-captured primates in a wild environment. The walk is leisurely, winding its
way through a tranquil forest setting. Along with numerous monkey species, you
can also see an abundance of indigenous bird-and wildlife. When you are done,
you can enjoy the offerings from the fully stocked Coffee Bar. It's also nice to
know that picnic baskets are available on order. It's a wonderful place to kick
back and relax, surrounded by fresh forest trees and the calls of the wild.
