KwaZulu-Natal is now home to one of the world's premier butterfly centers. Butterflies for Africa has been developed to combine the best elements of top butterfly houses from around the world with some unique features of its own.
The prime attraction of this fantasy land is the magnificent walk-through butterfly house which takes one into pure fantasyland. Here brightly coloured butterflies from across the world fly freely in a spectacular display. You can wander through the butterfly house at your own pace or accompany one of the helpful guides who will show you around at no extra cost. Watch out for the quails and colourful finches which add their voices to the sounds of cascading waterfalls and gentle streams. If you're lucky you may get to see butterflies emerging from their pupae. A visit here is truly memorable.
Whilst the amazing butterfly house is the main attraction there is a lot more to Butterflies for Africa. Your tour starts with a high impact audio visual presentation highlighting butterfly basics and some of the more unusual and quirky butterfly habits. From there visitors proceed to the small butterfly museum where bright displays provide a close up view of the world of the butterfly.
A monkey enclosure opened in late 2005 allowing visitors the opportunity to interact with rare cotton-top tamarin monkeys. Guided tours into the enclosure a held several times a day.
The centre also boasts a nursery selling butterfly foodplants, conference facilities, a coffee shop and the Butterfly Shop which is home to the largest range of butterfly inspired arts and crafts in Africa. On the cultural side the
Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery is a spacious showcase for local artists offering a wide range of tastefully presented artwork while
the African Art Centre features quality ethnic crafts.
Butterflies for Africa is open:
Tuesday - Friday from 9.00am to 4.30pm
Saturdays from 9.00am to 3.30pm
Sundays from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
The complex is just off the N3 highway in Pietermaritzburg at 37 Willowton Road.
