SANI PASS TOURS
Overland Adventure Tours
in Underberg, Drakensberg & Surroundings,
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Sani Pass Tours established in 1955, the company was founded as Mokhotlong Mountain Transport and
served as a carrier of essential goods and supplies – as well as a handful of intrepid passengers-
until 1957, when it changed its operational branding to the more relevant Sani Pass Tours. Today, it
focuses on offering tourists the thrill of tackling soaring peaks and plunging gorges –all from the
comfort and safety of specialist four-wheel vehicles driven by experienced and registered mountain
tourist guides.
The incredibly dramatic Sani Pass, which links two kingdoms while traversing the scenic Ukhahlamba
Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage Site, was once a migration path for wildlife and local Bushmen,
before becoming a favorite rustler route and tortuous trading trail. Today it is one of southern
Africa’s most spectacular tourist attractions, taking visitors on a winding switchback journey from
lush farmlands of the Southern Drakensberg to the rugged reaches on the Roof of Africa.
Operating a daily scheduled service from Underberg to the heady heights of the mountain kingdom is
Sani Pass Tours. Except for Christmas Day, the return journey of 7 hours operates every day.
Climbing 1000m in just 8 kilometers, passengers experience spectacular scenery, fascinating fauna
and flora and absorbing cultural traditions. And the opportunity to drink a toast to two kingdoms in
the highest pub in Africa.
In addition to the popular Sani Pass Day tour, visitors are offered overnight excursions to Sani Top
and adventure tours in Lesotho, and day tours in the southern Drakensberg.
