SEQUOIA GARDENS
Walk and Explore
in Haenertsburg, Capricorn,
Limpopo, South Africa
Whether your idea of a walk is a gentle stroll around a garden, a more
vigorous exploration of the many kilometres of paths through the 6ha of garden
and 25ha of pine plantations on Sequoia or a back-packing climb through the
exhilarating mountains and valleys of the Wolkberg, Sequoia Gardens is the
perfect base in one of South Africa's great natural landscapes.
The gardens include small, introverted formal spaces, two large dams and many
other views on water, unusual rose gardens, long controlled axial vistas, an
arboretum containing many rare temperate trees, and extensive walks - often in
near natural vegetation. The design concept is symphonic: perceived on a huge
scale, rhythm and contrast, theme and colour, repetition and counterpoint give
dramatic texture. On the other hand, you can forget about the musical
comparison, and just relax in the serene surroundings - or explore the spring
colour for which the area is famous. (Cheerio Gardens, where it all started on
'The Mountain', is only 100m upstream.) Our most beautiful season is not spring
though, but autumn. From mid-April to mid-May it is at its peak, and few gardens
anywhere in the world can rival Sequoia Gardens in autumn! Summer brings lush
green heaviness and hundreds of hydrangeas in bloom, and in winter the skeletons
of trees are reflected in still water and the shape of the land shows through.
In the immediate neighbourhood are walks down to the Broederstroom, one of the
best stretches of trout water in the country and the famous Haenertsburg
Grasslands, home to the Blue Swallow and, in season, wonderful veldflowers.
Other day-walks include Debegeni and the Forest Drive, birding in the very
different climate of Kurisa Moya and treetop canopy tours across magnificent
waterfalls where the Letaba drops down into the Lowveld. And of course much of
this can be done on a bicycle.
For the more adventurous, back-packing hikes in the Wolkberg Wilderness Area
give the chance to explore pristine streams in lost valleys and rugged mountain
slopes offering breathtaking views of the pinnacles of Limpopo. Still not
enough? The annual Iron Crown Trail Run in mid-July takes you on a half-marathon
from the Haenertsburg Village Green to the top of Limpopo's highest mountain, a
climb of over 680m and back. And the Ebenezer Mile in mid-March is known as the
cleanest open-water swim in South Africa.
