WILD MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES
Fresh-water Fishing in Barkly East
Southern Drakensberg
Eastern Cape, South Africa
The Southern Drakensberg is world famous for its fly-fishing with over 200kms of mountain rivers filled all year
around with wild trout and yellowfish in the summer months. Reknowned fly fisherman Tom Sutcliffe had this to say about the rivers that Wild Mountain
Adventures we can give you exclusive access to:
"There are good streams here, streams that are small and cosy; tight streams with clear water and strong trout. The Diepspruit is an example, and
there are others, like the Willow and the Jochim, all within easy reach. Added to this is the larger Kraai, with rainbows, browns and smallmouth
yellowfish. These streams are more dominated by their landscapes, the valleys they flow through, than other streams I know of hereabouts, landscapes
that are abundant, almost so splendid you can't find the words to describe them. You would call these rivers nymphing waters, though one of the best
fish I ever had when it came to raw power I took from the Diepspruit on a dry fly, a tiny size 18 Adams. That fish burned line off the reel and in the
end I never got to see it, though it left with me the impression of a hooking a swordfish more than a trout. It was the sort of fish that makes you
feel you want to go back, just to test yourself, to see what else the water can offer."
In order to preserve fish stocks and the river ecosystem the Diepspruit has been reserved for the sole use of Rosstrevor guests. Whilst staying with
us you can enjoy the exclusive opportunity to fish these pristine waters. This, combined with our day fishing trips on the Jochim and Kraai rivers
means that we have exclusive access to over 25kms of the best fly-fishing waters in the region.
The actual fishing is only part of the experience. Whilst walking our rivers you will have the chance to explore wonderful gorges with stunning rock
formations and bushman paintings. With over 230 species in the area the bird life is also prolific. To make your day out at the river complete we can
provide a picnic lunch. For the more adventurous we can arrange for you to camp overnight in a riverside cave, so you really can fish day and night if
you want to!
If you would like to add variety to their holidays, (or keep the rest of the family occupied so that you can fish in peace...), Wild Mountain
Adventures offers the opportunity to combine your fishing holiday with other activities. Options include 4x4 trails, scenic drives, river rafting,
horse riding, hiking, mountain biking and bird watching. All of these activities can be booked as day trips or combined to create multi-day adventure
