The farm Allendale was purchased with the view of creating a unique
destination celebrating the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site (WHS) in
an historic agricultural setting.
The nature reserve is 1900 hectares (4180 acres) in extent and comprises an
entire valley of the "Little Berg" offering absolute seclusion from the
surrounding Midlands farmlands and a "Foot in Two Worlds" so to speak. While
being close to the Midlands, Allendale is the only private Drakensberg Reserve
to be physically included into the World Heritage Site (WHS). The reserve shares
an unfenced 15 kilometre boundary with the WHS, one of the world's great
wilderness areas. It includes exceptional historical, cultural, natural and
ecological features and is regarded as having some of the finest game and bird
viewing in the Drakensberg.
Accommodation is offered in two completely separate homesteads in different
parts of the reserve. These can be hired independently of each other, or for
complete privacy and exclusive use of the reserve, together.
The Main House
A luxury stone farm house with a wrap around verandah situated in an established
garden/farmstead with breathtaking views into the Midlands.
It consists of the following:
- 3 en suite bedrooms with king size beds
- 1 en suite bedroom with a double and a single bed
- 1 separate en suite bedroom in adjacent cottage (for overflow or staff)
- Fully equipped modern kitchen with informal dining for up to 8 people
- Formal dining room for up to 14 people
- Main lounge with large fireplace
- Second lounge with Cable TV
- Front verandah with informal dining facilities and an outside lounge
- Back verandah with barbecue & braai facilities
Entabeni Cottage
A rustic stone farm house with a wrap around verandah situated in an established
garden/farmstead with breathtaking views of the valley.
It consists of the following:
- 2 en suite bedrooms with king size beds (showers only)
- 2 bedrooms with 2x single beds each, with a shared bathroom including
shower and bath
- Basic kitchen
- Dining room with 8 seater table
- Lounge with large fireplace and Cable TV (being installed)
- Staff accommodation
Food & Service
Guests are required to bring all their own food and drinks and cook for
themselves unless another arrangement has been made. Both houses are serviced
twice daily. Staff can assist with basic cooking/food preparation, teas and
coffees, lighting of fires and saddling of horses.
Location
The property is located approximately 35 kms from Nottingham Road village on
the Kamberg/Lotheni Road, bordering onto the Kamberg Nature Reserve. It is
accessible from both the Kamberg/Rosetta Road and the Lower Lotheni Road.
From Nottingham Road, Turn left onto the Lower Lotheni Road marked Underberg and
Sani Pass at the police station. After 29 kilometres turn right onto the gravel
road marked "Giants Castle" and "Kamberg". After 3.9 kilometres turn left onto
the farm road marked "Allendale". Driving time ex Durban 1 hour and 45 minutes
ex Johannesburg 4 hours and 15 minutes.
