The Appelhuis, once used as storage shed for harvested apples, has been
beautifully restored into a self-catering stone cottage, located on a working
fruit farm 6km outside Barrydale on the farm Doornrivier and nestled in between
the orchards. In season and on request our guests may pick of the freshest fruit
for their enjoyment while taking a leisurely walk through the orchards.
The cottage has two double bedrooms both with en-suite bathrooms and another two
single beds in the open plan living area and sleeps a maximum of seven. The
cottage has a fully equipped open plan kitchen, a comfortable living and patio
area with breathtaking views of the farm and surrounding mountains from which to
watch starry nights. An outside braai area and indoor fireplace ensures that
you'll leave with fond memories of conversation with friends and family. The
cottage is fully equipped and includes patio furniture, DSTV (bring own decoder
box), dvd player, bath and shower, bedding and towels, fridge/freezer,
microwave, stove/oven and under floor heating for the cooler winter nights. If
privacy, relaxation and outdoor activities are what you are after, then the
Appelhuis is for you.
When in season, a bowl of fresh fruit along with flowers picked from Yvonne and
Anna's garden await you. After awakening to the sound of birds; enjoy the early
morning sun and breakfast on the front patio. Guests are encouraged to explore
the farm and enjoy the pleasures of the veld and fynbos, abundant birdlife,
small wild mammals, and off course the tranquil setting. You might want embrace
the crisp mornings with a refreshing jog, cycle to town or if you’re feeling a
bit more adventurous go for a hike to Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. In summer
you'll be able to cool off in the dam and if you're lucky you might even catch
fresh water bass!
The Appelhuis is a five minute drive to town, where you can eat and browse among
a variety of Barrydale restaurants, deli's (11 of which is open during the day
and 2 at night) and shops, explore the charming little town or simply pop into
the grocery store and buy ingredients to prepare a scrumptious meal back at the
cottage. We are a convenient 15 min. drive from the hotwater springs (which
allows day visitors), to relax aching muscles after an active day.
