Welgelegen (main house) The Loft and Garden Flat are a self catering house and cottage units set in a large picturesque garden (6000 m2) on the upper slopes of Clarens with breathtaking views of the village and surrounding Maluti mountains.

Welgelegen - the Main House

The main house can accommodate 7 people comfortably (3 x double bedrooms with one extra bed, 2 x bathrooms.
Open plan lounge ( TV & open fire place) , dining room, with fully equipped kitchen. Stoep with great mountain views.(Weber braai)

The Loft - Cottage

The Loft can accommodate 4 people comfortably.
Two bedrooms (1x queen bed & 2 x singles) 1 x bathroom, lounge / kitchen and view balcony)
The accommodation is serviced by Emily -0733835267 . Washing, ironing and baby sitting can be negotiated at a fee. She speaks English, Afrikaans, Sotho & Zulu .
Undercover parking is available for 2 cars.

Where is Clarens

Clarens is situated on the scenic Free State Highlands route 17km from the Golden Gate National park and the QuaQua National park. The village of Clarens is 3½ hours from Durban, 2½ hours from Bloemfontein and 3 hours from Johannesburg. It is also found on the Maluti route, which takes you into Lesotho.

What to do and what to see

Clarens and the area offers many unique things to see and do:

• Hiking & Walking - in the hills around town or Golden Gate National Park (17 kms), Bokpoort (10 kms), St.Fort (5km).
• Game Viewing - at the Golden Gate National park & Lion Park.
• Horse Riding - Bokpoort or Golden Gate
• Arts and Crafts - see shops in town and galleries on farms
• Boer War sites - Surrender Hill about 10 kms on the Fouriesburg road
• Trout Fishing - at Craigrossie (R50/person), Sebida Lodge & other sites or throw a line in at the dam in the kloof up the road from the cottage.
• Dinosaur Fossils - in 1998 the BBC sent a crew to make a documentary of the fossils in the area.
• Bushman Paintings (Rock Art) - in the hills surrounding Clarens and at Golden Gate.
• Cycling - on your own or they can be hired in town.
• Swimming - in the pool in town or take a dip in the "swem gat' (rock pool) below the tennis courts in town / in the kloof past the dam behind the house or at the kloof behind the Glen Reenen camp site at Golden Gate (recommended).
• Sports - 18 hole golf course in town or course in Bethlehem, Tennis / Bowls / Squash in town, Water sports - sailing / skiing / boating at Loch Athlone just outside Bethlehem.

Some other interesting outings:

• Witzieshoek- 1 hour through Golden Gate to a scenic site just below the Mount Aux Sources peak overlooking the Kwa Zulu Natal escarpment below.
• Basotho Cultural Village - about half an hour on the same road.
• Traditional Fertility Cave - on the Fouriesburg road about 11 km.
• Mushroom Rock - 1 km
• Museum in village - a bit sparse but is shortly to be re-done.
• The Katse Dam in Lesotho - main dam of the Highlands water project (passport required).
• The Ash River outfall - 8 km on the Bethlehem Rd.
• Sunday Braai - next to the river at Sunnyside Guest Farm

If all this sounds a bit much, stay exactly where you are and absorb the fresh air, peace and quiet, and mountain views.
