The town of Mossel Bay holds many delights and treasures for those who, like Diaz, will take the time to explore. Although the town is only 1.5 km from the N2, it is a million miles away from anywhere else.

And just like Diaz discovered Mossel Bay way back in 1488, visitors to the town are discovering what luxury is all about. Tourists are mostly familiar with the Garden Route, but they have yet to discover Mossel Bay, which had for long been regarded as the Cinderella town of the Garden Route. She has however come of age and has shod her rags. She is fast becoming the most sought after destination on the Garden Route, but somehow she has succeeded in retaining her charm and laid back atmosphere.

The Diaz Strand Hotel and Resort is one of her brightest charms. The luxury new hotel with 90 sea facing rooms, all with their own balcony, is named in honour of Bartholomeu Dias. The hotel is themed on the long and vivid history of the area and with luxurious suites named after Dias and his companions, you will feel yourself surrounded by the charm of heritage.

The hotel is virtually on the beach: only a cocktail bar stands between the hotel and the beach and it is up to you to decide whether you want to go around or through the bar! Apart from its fabulous location the hotel also has a few other unique characteristics. The largest ceiling painting in the Southern Cape, an enormous 144 m2, depicting the 'Fantasy of the Discovery of the World' and more particular the 'Discovery of Mossel Bay' forms the focal point of the Bahia Dos Vaqueiros Restaurant in the luxury Diaz Strand Hotel, which opened its doors in July this year.

The Bahia Dos Vaquieros Restaurant is Mossel Bay's first exclusive fine dining restaurant where you can experience modern contemporary cuisine. The Executive Chef, Michael Dewsnap, incorporates the abundance of fresh ingredients from the local area into his dishes. Michael invites you to come and experience his food and to come and enjoy the warm, stylish ambience of the restaurant complemented by efficient, knowledgeable service.

Enjoy a pre dinner drink at the Cantina Donna's ladies bar before taking up your seat at the table overlooking the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, Seal Island and the lights of Mossel Bay. For whisky lovers the bar stocks single malts like Glen Grant and Glenlivet, aged from 12 to 21 years.

And after dinner you can enjoy dessert wines such as Klein Vrede, Vergelegen, Rupert & Rothschild.

After dinner you are invited to enjoy the ambience of the cigar lounge where range of Cuban cigars.
