ELANDS BAY GUESTHOUSE
Self Catering House Accommodation
in Elands Bay, Cape West Coast,
Western Cape, South Africa
The Guesthouse, which has been in operation since 2001, is located 250km
north of Cape Town on the West Coast and is easily accessed on tar all the way
driving the R27. We are beneath the Provincial Heritage Site of Baboon Point,
also known as Cape Deseda and immediately west of the estuary mouth of the
internationally recognized Ramsar site, Verlorenvlei. Our Google co-ords are
32deg19'05"S and 18deg19'46"E. The rocky shore and beach are a 200m stroll in
front of the guesthouse accessed via a boardwalk thru the coastal vegetation and
primary dune system. The estuary mouth, rocky shore and vlei are home to over
189 different species of birdlife of which 75 are waterbirds, including the
endangered Oyster Catcher.
The guesthouse is a fully furnished and equipped self catering establishment
with a maximum capacity of sixteen guests accommodated in three double ensuite
bedrooms, two twin bedrooms and a dormitory/bunk bedroom with three double bunks
essentially intended for children. A large well equipped kitchen, full communal
bathroom, DSTV lounge, sun lounge, dining area and a braai balcony with sea
views make up the balance of the building with a games room (coin operated pool
table & table tennis), and swimming pool outside the main building. We regret
that smoking is not permitted anywhere in the guesthouse and that pets are not
allowed.
The rocky shore, or Left Point is a world class sought after surfing wave
frequented by both local and international surfers, and still continues to
deliver uncrowded waves to many. The onset of spring heralds the arrival of
fields of colour as the renowned West Coast flower season begins, whilst summer
brings crayfish, snoek, galjoen and hotnotvis to the braai. Rock art exists in
the caves below Baboon Point and is an archeological treasure chest richly
deserved of the protection it now enjoys; long beach walks ensure beautiful
isolation in an unspoilt environment of crashing waves and sea life. Hiking,
fishing, diving, kiteboarding, surfing, mountain biking, canoeing, wind surfing,
birdwatching or just relaxing are some of the activities enjoyed by visitors to
Elands Bay.
The beauty of Elands Bay lies in the fact that sustainable infrastructure
development has been limited and little has changed in Elands over the last
thirty years other than the yearly addition of a few more holiday homes, unlike
other coastal towns to south! There are two shops that supply the basics like
milk, bread, firewood etc, but essentially your food and drink supply for your
stay should be brought with you from home. Eating out options exist at the local
restaurant (specific opening times) and out of town at Lamberts Bay 27km’s away.
Summers in Elands Bay can be hot and windy but the sparkling swimming pool at
the guesthouse plus the protection from the wind enjoyed by our location,
mitigate these factors. Winters are the best kept secret of the West Coast,
generally still, with warm days and cold nights, and a rapidly filling
Verlorenvlei to monitor!
