Elephant hills was rated "One of the Ten best holiday rentals in South Africa" by Real Simple magazine. The self catering family holiday house sits on the banks of the Klein River on a nature reserve with interrupted views of the mountains and river. The house is situated in an unspoilt historic village an hour and a half from Cape Town.

The house sleeps eight guests in four bedrooms (two double beds, 4 single beds) with glorious views. There are two bathrooms (shower and bath). The beautiful living area comprises a generous open plan double volume space with floor to ceiling glass folding doors which open to the wide verandah. There is a fully-equipped, modern kitchen and separate scullery and large slate fireplace.

From the wide covered veranda you can sit and stare at the gentle mountains we call the Elephant Hills (if you look carefully you can see a herd marching across the horizon) or you can wander down to the river for a swim, canoe or fish or take the path through the fynbos to the old village.

Stanford has the feel of an old western cape rural village with an air of tranquillity and simplicity about it, but there is a wide range of interesting and fun things to do. You can wander around the town on foot visiting art shows, book shops, antique and junk shops and many coffee shops and restaurants (including the wonderful and highly rated mariana's owl house) and the slow food deli, Graze.

In and around the village there are walks, horse rides, cycling routes, superb golf courses and good bird watching.

The clean and beautiful river runs in front of the house and is perfect for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Boat trips can be taken down the river at sunset.

The safe surfing beaches and wonderful whale watching in Hermanus are fifteen minutes drive away as is the world famous shark cage diving in Gansbaai.

The Birkenhead brewery and the award-winning Klein river cheese factory are worth a visit as are many of the local vineyards which are carving an excellent reputation for Overberg region wines.
