ESELFONTEIN GETAWAY
Self Catering House Accommodation
in Ceres, Breede River Valley,
Western Cape, South Africa
Set into one of the fertile corners of the beautiful Ceres Valley lies Eselfontein Farm, waiting to be explored and enjoyed. It is the oldest farmstead
in the valley, and its obvious why the early pioneers settled here.
The Hexriver and Skurweberg Mountains rise majestically above the farm, and the
magnificent farm dam (which is open to guests) lies tucked into the foothills of
these ranges providing crystal highland water to the land below. Eselfontein is
as varied as it is beautiful, with lush orchards and riverine woodland in the
valleys, climbing to fynbos and mountain veld in the higher areas. The farm's
2500 hectares includes plenty of mountain and hill terrain above the valley
floor. Farm activities include apple, pear and peach production, as well as
dairy and wheat. Snaking through all this is a world-class mountain bike course,
with 50 km of pristine single track, which takes in the scenic splendor of both
the farm and the broader surrounds. These tracks, along with the farm roads,
also offer running and hiking enthusiasts well-marked routes. Motorboats are
welcome on the very large farm dam and any form of water sport that comes with
them. For the more sedate, there's trout fishing in the streams and bass fishing
in the dam, and a rich bird life offered by the diverse surroundings.
EZELFONTEIN GUEST HOUSE is central to all this.
Take in breathtaking views from the farmhouse-style guesthouse, with
fully equipped kitchen, airy rooms, inside and outside braai's. Fully relax and
rejuvenate or simply charge on, as there are plenty of activities: fishing in
the Titus River, serious world class single-track mountain biking trails, a
spectacular farm dam for fishing and water sports, and marked tracks for scenic
jogging and hiking.
The guesthouse can sleep 10 people. There are 5 rooms and 3 bathrooms. 3 double
rooms, 2 single rooms. The house is a "green" house. There is no "ESKOM" power!
The lights and the fridge/freezer run off battery/solar power. Hot water is
provided by gas.
The ECO-HUTS-AT-THE-DAM offer a wilder experience.
A 3km rambling farm track takes one from the farmyard to six bamboo and thatch
huts that have cleverly been set into a shady wooded plantation near the farm
dam literally at the foot of the Hexriver Mountains and surrounded by lush
fynbos. Here, one really is taken 'out of the way', with an overwhelming feeling
of serenity thrown in. Although seemingly remote, certain creature comforts have
not been forgotten. There's a wood-fired boiler providing hot water, flush
toilets, showers, and a very well kitted indoor/outdoor lapa with both indoor
and outdoor braai's! The 6 huts are basic yet charming, with two single beds and
mattresses each offering accommodation for twelve. The dam, with its own ski hut
and lapa, is nearby, and all the farms leisure activities on tap. Indeed, the
mountain bike track passes within a whisker of the eco huts and is open to
guests.
Both the guesthouse and eco huts are only rented to one group of people at a
time.
There are also other activities in the immediate area, horse riding and an
enduro track on the next door farms.
