HONEYGUIDE SELF-CATERING COTTAGE
Self Catering Cottage Accommodation
in Sani Pass, Southern Drakensberg,
KwaZulu-Nata, South Africa
Honeyguide Self-Catering Cottage is situated on the famous Sani Pass,
nestling at the base of the little Berg on Stromness Farm, which borders
directly onto the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. The cottage
has magnificent views of Hodgson's Peaks (The Giant's Cup) which forms part of
the escarpment dividing Lesotho from South Africa. This peaceful country haven
is owner run by Simone and Russell Suchet (author of "A Backpacker's Guide to
Lesotho"), who have been involved in tourism since 1992. The stress of city life
will simply melt away, as you kick off your shoes and relax on the verandah,
whilst inhaling the pure air in tranquil surrounds, with pristine nature right
on your doorstep.
"I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in tune once
more" (Burroughs 1837 - 1921)
Activities
This is an ideal place for a family holiday, as there are plenty of activities
and action packed tours on offer, from tours up Sani Pass into Lesotho (1 to 6
days and as far as Katse Dam), horseriding, and guided walks to bushman
paintings. The tours run by Russell and Simone's company called Drakensberg
Adventures, are designed for the intrepid explorer and are led by experienced,
highly qualified guides.
Once you are here, you need not step back into your vehicle, as the cottage is
perfectly situated for exploring the Drakensberg Mountains on foot. The 5 day
Giant's Cup Trail may be started from here, as well as numerous day hikes, where
you can dip in crystal clear streams and idyllic mountain pools, see reedbuck,
eland, duiker, rhebok, baboon, rock hyrax, bearded and Cape vulture, or capture
the plethora of wild flowers on film or sketchpad. This is an area poets and
artists dream of.
Named after one of the bird species found here, the cottage is a good base for
observing the prolific birdlife. The gardens have been carefully planted with a
variety of indigenous shrubs, trees and flowering plants, to attract birds and
butterflies and where duiker and reedbuck are made welcome.
There is something for the whole family - mom can relax on the verandah with a
magnificent view, sketch or paint the many wild flowers in spring, whilst dad
goes bass / trout fishing on dams nearby, takes on the challenge of mountain
biking up Sani Pass, or plays golf nearby . River rafting for all levels is
available in the district in summer. Children can visit the Giant's Cup tea
garden just 150m away, for a milkshake, pancake, homemade icecream, piece of
legendary chocolate cake or to feed the rabbits and play on the swings.
