Situated in the Northwest corner of Botswana and administrative capital of Ngamiland District, Maun is the fifth largest town of
Botswana. The town is an eclectic mix of modern buildings and native huts. Although still officially a village, Maun has developed rapidly and now
boasts shopping centres, hotels and lodges as well as car hire companies. Local tribesmen still bring their cattle to market at Maun, and the Lechwe
can be seen grazing next to local donkeys, goats and cattle. Maun has become a regional trans-shipment center for materials and traders who service
the local camps and safari centres, and the mushrooming mineral exploration camps in northwestern Botswana. There are a wide variety of services in
stores as well as many local entrepreneurs with welding ventures operated from the back of a cart. Tourists fly into the Maun International Airportand
stay at the local lodges including Maun Lodge, Rileys Hotel, the Crocodile Camp Lodge or other safari lodges in the immediate vicinity. Often, these
tourists take the road to Nata, or otherwise fly to several tourist camps in the Okavango Delta. |
