Elandslaagte is a tiny KwaZulu-Natal village and railway station situated between Ladysmith and Dundee in the picturesque Biggarsberg Mountains. Elandslaagte was abandoned by the British forces in October 1899 after they had fought a fierce battle to re-open the railway line in order to facilitate the retreat of their soldiers from Dundee. From here they fled to Ladysmith, where they were besieged by the Boers for 118 days in the famous Siege of Ladysmith.

Elandslaagte battlefield occupies a central position in the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route and draws visitors worldwide. Due to its location, it is an ideal base from which to explore the historical sites that surround it.

There are numerous hiking trails on offer in the vicinity of Elandslaagte where the abundant game and birdlife can be enjoyed in their now peaceful bush habitat.

Although tiny in size (but not in name) the crucial battle fought at Elandslaagte ensures its enduring position on the historical map of South Africa.
