Given that this region of Zululand has become a major tourist attraction, Hluhluwe
village has become an important staging post for visitors to the area. The N2 highway
passing through the region makes for easy access by car and the Hluhluwe air strip
further facilitates access to the many attractions Northern Zululand has to offer.
In addition to the Game Park, private game reserves and wilderness trails that
characterise the region, the diver's haven of Sodwana is within a comfortable distance
of Hluhluwe, as is St Lucia Wetlands.
"Zululand Wilderness" is an apt description of the area surrounding the village
of Hluhluwe. It is also the title of an enchanting book by the well known conservationist
Ian Player, (brother of golfer, Gary), written to celebrate the life of Qumbu Ntombela,
a Zulu game guard and tracker who along with the author and other leading figures,
was instrumental in the creation and development of the world renowned Hluhluwe-Umfolozi
Game Park.
The legacy left to the world by those who fought tirelessly and often thanklessly
to preserve this tiny part of our planet as a sanctuary for the wildlife that tourists
can now enjoy is priceless.
