Windhoek is Namibia's capital city and is situated in the Central Highlands, surrounded by the Eros and Auas Mountains. The climate here is fairly typical for a city 1650 metres above sea level and surrounded by semi-desert, with hot days and cool nights. In the architecture of the city the visitor will see a lot of influence dating back to the days of German colonialism. The old buildings of the city add to its continental charm. There is the seat of government, the Tintenpalast (Palace of Ink) and the white painted Alte Feste, once a fort and now a museum. Three castles built in the early 1900s add a touch of Romance.

The city is one of wide streets and avenues, lined with trees, sidewalk cafés and beer gardens. Windhoek is a city that offers the visitor every modern amenity. The hotels and restaurants are good and offer both European and local cuisine, including excellent choices of fresh seafood imported daily from Namibia's fishing fleet. There is still masses of German influence, and the beer is brewed according to the best of German tradition. Every October there is a traditional Oktoberfest with the familiar oompah band.
