The Umgeni River Bird Park houses over 3000 exotic and indigenous birds, including many endangered species in a beautiful parkland setting just a 10 min drive from the Durban Beachfront. The bird park is spread across 4 hectares set against the 100 foot sheer cliffs of the Umgeni River. Several waterfalls cascade into the pools below surrounded by palms, cycads and lush tropical plants.
These birds which have been collected from countries around the world are housed in 3 large walk-thru
aviaries as well as numerous smaller enclosures.
The Umgeni River Bird Park plays an important conservation role and works in close association with the South African Crane Working Group. Various species of endangered crane, including the indigenous Wattled Cranes are hand-reared at the park and later released into the wild. Many other rare and endangered species, such as the Caribbean flamingo, cockatoos, and macaws has been successfully bred at the bird park.
The Free Flight Birds Shows, held twice daily includes fascinating demonstrations with Cape Vultures, Ground Hornbills, Wattled Crane and macaws, with a focus on conservation and education.
Tea and light lunches are available at a relaxing thatched roofed restaurant set in tranquil surroundings.
