Echo Caves

The Echo Caves are situated near Ohrigstad in Mpumalanga, The Echo Caves were discovered in 1923 by the owner of the farm called Klipfonteinhoek. Whilst searching for a source of water he discovered the caves and also realized some of his cattle had already disappeared into the caves. After he explored the caves he realized that this was the most beautiful gem of nature.

Later after the Abel Erasmus Pass and the Strijdom Tunnel had been completed in 1959, the Echo Caves was declared a National Monument .

The Cave consist of many stalactites (a type of secondary mineral that hangs from the ceiling or wall of limestone caves) and stalagmite (a type of cave formation that rises from the floor of a limestone cave due to the dripping of mineralized solutions and the deposition of calcium carbonate) formations, which can be viewed from walkways with electric lights, railings and staircases that have been installed in the cave for safety can convenience. The limestone and dripstone structures inside the natural caverns make interesting imaginary figures which can be seen in chambers throughout the cave as it winds through the mountain, the most recent discoveries include Madonna and Crystal Palace chambers.

Guided tours for the young and old are available every day of the year , times starting from 08h30 and ending at 16h00, the tours last 45 minutes to an hour and are very entertaining.

Echo Caves activities include guided tours, hiking in the surrounding mountains, visits to the curious shop, bird watching, wildlife (including Llama, Ducks, baboons and monkeys), the museum of man, The Three Rondavels' views over Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes' rock formations, the Mac Mac falls and God's window views.
