The month of July brings with it the annual Vodacom Durban July, the most
widely anticipated horse racing event in Africa, and a definite highlight of the
social calendar. This year's event takes place on Saturday July 2.
Greyville race course sets the scene for a fashion extravaganza of note, with
society folk competing for the title of best dressed couple. The competition
attracts a multitude of oddly interesting outfits, made in almost every possible
shape, size and colour .Each year brings with it something completely new and
different.
A number of marquees scattered around the track set the scene for much eating,
drinking and merriment. A competition for the best test is also an annual
highlight, with large corporate companies setting up and inviting the who's who
to attract attention to their tents .
The race itself sees a total prize amount of over R30 million being paid out.
Betting for the event is operated by Gold Circle, opening a few days before the
race, or one can bet at a tote, or on track at Greyville. Gold Circle also
operates telephone betting and interactive betting. Parking is limited for
several kilometres around the track, so it is advised to take a taxi to the
course.
