Shakaland is situated in the beautiful Etembeni Hills, near Eshowe,
overlooking Lake Phobane, previously known as Goedetrouw dam. The traditional
homestead is a reconstruction of the kraal of Senzangakhona, King Shaka's
father, and provides visitors with possibly the most authentic Zulu cultural
experience available.
With prior arrangements, visitors can tour the Zulu village which is overseen by
Chief Malinga and his family. Shakaland is the oldest "Zulu Cultural Village" in
Zululand, and was originally built as a set for the movie "Shaka Zulu". The
traditional homestead consists of a number of Zulu beehive huts, which form a
circle around the cattle kraal.
Visitors to Shakaland can expect lots of excitement, with regular tribal dance
demonstrations, accompanied by the beating of the Zulu drums. An informative
insight into the various aspect of Zulu culture, including customs and beliefs,
rituals, and attire is provided by the knowledgeable staff. Shakaland also helps
explain the process of traditional spear making, beadwork, pot making and the
construction of their homes, as well as allowing visitors to consult with a
genuine Sangoma, or witchdoctor. This is followed by a fast paced Induku or
stick fighting demonstration, by Zulu warriors, after which guests can enjoy a
lunch of either a hot or cold buffet, which includes various traditional Zulu
foods, with authentic Zulu beer.
