Silverglen Nature Reserve

NO COMMISSION SINCE 1998

Silverglen Nature Reserve

The two hundred and twenty hectare Silverglen nature reserve is the largest piece of public land consisting of coastal grassland and bush clump mosaic that remains in the Durban municipal area. Incorporated into the reserve is a visitors centre, car park and toilet facilities, as well as the the Silverglen Muthi Nursery, which is the first medicinal nursery in Africa. The nursery's primary focus is to grow and propagate muthi plants using indigenous knowledge. The nursery cultivates about one hundred and twenty endangered or threatened plant species, and plays a vital role in conserving Durban's natural flora.

Silverglen Nature Reserve offers various self guided trails and picnic areas. The first of three trails featured in the reserve is the Nursery trail, covering a distance of about one kilometer. Slightly longer is the Grassland trail, taking between two and two and a half hours. The grassland trail is self guided but on the third Saturday of every month it is led by a member of the Parks Department staff. A third trail, the Pipeline Loop trail, is a continuation of the Grassland trail.
