The Drakensberg Boys' Choir was founded in 1965, and had a total of twenty
students. The goal was to create a multiracial, multicultural choir school that
would rival the Vienna Boys' choirs. The group now boasts international acclaim,
and is widely regarded as one of the best boys' choirs in the world. Extremely
competitive auditions are held throughout South Africa annually, and today the
choir has an enrollment of about one hundred boys varying in age between nine
and fifteen.
Their popular performances have taken them to the United States on numerous
occasions, on of which saw them receiving a special award from Disney’s Magic
Kingdom. The group has travelled to Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary,
Italy, Poland, Portugal, England, Finland, Switzerland, Turkey, and have even
been requested to sing for the Pope, in the Vatican City. Additionally, they
have toured Australia, various Asian countries and much of Africa including
Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
The world renowned choir performs for an auditorium of six hundred seats, often
filled to capacity in concerts and music festivals which feature some of the
country’s most popular artists. The first portion of each concert is reserved
strictly classical music and features the works of greats such as Bach, Handel,
Mozart or Beethoven. The second half of the performance almost always includes a
hidden surprise or two - jazz, folk music, or music by Freddie Mercury - a
magnificent musical variety truly appreciated by enthusiasts. This is not simple
music by any means. The boys take on complex melodies and difficult rhythms and
are extremely good at offering music from the different genres. The choir can
cater to a variety of audiences from young to old.
