The East London Museum contains fascinating array of exhibits that bring to life the natural history and the cultural history of the area.

The Maritime Gallery holds a collection of relics from the many shipwrecks near East London, and displays several model ships of these of the majestic tall ships that once visited the  Buffalo Harbour.

The Border Gallery contains a display of the  beautiful beadwork produced by the Xhosa (Southern Nguni), and various Victorian era exhibits that illustrate the architecture and styles of that era. The German Settlers Gallery captures the culture of this particular group of European settlers Eastern Cape who arrived in the  1850's.

The Coelacanth was first discovered off the coast of East London in 1938 - a species previously thought to be extinct. A specimen of this incredible creature is now on display in the  Natural History Gallery. The gallery also displays various collections of plants, reptiles and mammals.

Anthropological Discoveries in the Eastern Cape include a skull found near Hofmeyr believed to be over 30,000 years old, and fossilized human  footprints dating back 120,000 years.

Other off-site sections of the East London Museum include the Calgary Transport Museum and the nearby Gately House, a Victorian home of former mayor John Gately.
