The Middelburg Cultural and Historical Museum is located in an old Victorian
building on the corner of Bennie and Du Plessis Streets. This building was
originally the home of the Poor School. The school was opened in 1898, for the
children of the poor, and operated until 1914. The museum was established here
in 1985.
The Middelburg Museum displays the history of the Karoo town of Middelburg and
surrounding areas. It houses interesting collections of memorabilia and
items of history from stone age to present day. Exhibits housed at the
Middelburg Cultural History Museum include various displays on the Anglo-Boer
War, century-old Xhosa beadwork, San artefacts and a number of pieces by
renowned aviation artist Tiro Vorster.
