Gately House

Gately House was once the home of John Gately, an Irish immigrant who became a prominent businessman. Gately was a popular figure in early East London, and was one of the founders of the municipal council, as well as being elected as East London's Mayor more than once. In 1966 the house was acquired by the East London Museum.

Gately House is a single storey structure, which features a veranda on three sides, and is set in a pleasant garden adjoining Queens Park. Built in 1876, Gately House is an excellent example of a modest Victorian home, and is one of the only house museums in South Africa which still contains the original furniture. It was proclaimed as a National Monument in 1973. Magnificent pieces of antique furniture such as balloon-back chairs, an impressive mahogany dinner table and a leather button-back suite, are housed in the building, .

Gately House is open Tues-Thurs 10:00-13:00 & Fri: 10:00-13:00. Weekends: 15:00-17:00. Closed Mondays, Good Friday and Christmas Day
