Towards the end of the 1890's East London became a centre for the wool trade, with buying and selling of wool, as well as regular auctions being conducted by wool brokers. With the further expansion of the local wool industry, various co-operatives for buyers and brokers were formed.1928 saw the decision of the East London Wool and Mohair Buyers Association, to construct a premises for a wool exchange. Construction of the project was completed in 1930.

In 1981, wool buying in the Eastern Cape moved to Port Elizabeth, and the Wool Exchange building located on the corner of Hill and Station Streets in East London, was purchased by Rhodes University as the new site of their new East London campus in 1982. The Old East London Wool Exchange is a National Monument.

This building is in use, though visits could be arranged with permission of the university authorities. For more information contact (043) 704 7000
