Marutswa Forest

Marutswa Forest

The Marutswa Forest Project concept and planning was initiated in 2004 and officially opened in July 2008. This indigenous forest is on state land and is managed by Ezemvelo Wildlife. The intention of the project is to promote the conservation of Bulwer's unique biodiversity by supporting eco-tourism initiatives which will in turn lead to the conservation of threatened forest habitats.

There are three forest trails all starting at the quaint visitors centre.

The contour trail : As its name implies is virtually flat. Starting at the visitors centre passes through the a habilitation zone before entering the forest. This walk is approximately 1275m and ends on grasslands with distant views over a rural landscape. Walkers then turn around and walk back along the same route. This trail is very user friendly, with boardwalks and steps built over any difficult stretch.

The tanglewood detour : Branches off the contour path and takes you on a gradual climb of 10 - 15m before joining the contour path once more.

The terrace traverse : for the more energetic rises up through the grasslands before entering the forest at the base of the scree slopes, it then undulates along the terrace before descending down through huge boulders to join the tanglewood detour.
