The scenic 1,600 hectare Sterkspruit Nature Reserve lies adjacent to the historic Long Tom Pass, and incorporates the catchment area of the rapidly flowing Sterkspruit River which is stocked with rainbow trout. Situated just ten kilometers to the south-east of Lydenburg, this escarpment reserve incorporates a number of natural habitats which include highveld grassland, forested kloofs, wooded stream banks, and quartzite cliffs. The Sterkspruit Nature Reserve offers visitors pure mountain air and majestic mountain views,which are a major attraction drawing fly fishermen, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Aside from the unspoilt and immaculate scenery, the Sterkspruit Nature Reserve is also home to an interesting variety of mammals which include Porcupine, Aardwolf, Cape Clawless Otter, Serval and Oribi. Although not native to the reserve, Black Leopard have recently been sighted in the area too. The reserve is also a popular birding destination, and displays an impressive total of almost a hundred and fifty recorded species. Amongst these are Ground Woodpecker, Blackwinged Plover, Bush Blackcap and Cape Rock Thrush.
