The Legoya Huts, located roughly ten kilometers from Ermelo on the Darvel road, are a collection of stone ruins which date back to between 1500BC and colonial times. The origins of the ruins remain unclear, however it is believed that the Legoya people who once lived in this area abandoned their settlement in the early 1800's during the bloody Difaqane. These events saw invading Nguni clans driving away many of the local tribes.
The Legoya huts consists of ninety corbel stone huts which cover an area of four hectares, and is located on a mesa, surrounded by picturesque forestest, streams and a waterfall. Early exploration of the site has led to the discovery of various artefacts and other objects of early Sotho/Pedi origin, dating back to around 1400 AD. The settlement, which is the largest settlement of it's kind, was declared a National Monument in 1986, and this important Heritage Site attracts large numbers of visitors.
