The town of Newcastle in KwaZulu Natal, is very well situated on various tourist routes and could be utilised as a stopover point or holiday destination for enthusiastic birdwatchers. The town gives easy access through a whole range of circle routes to top birding destinations at Memel, Chelmsford Dam, Dundee, Biggarsberg, Utrecht and Wakkerstroom.

The Newcastle Sewerage Works is rapidly becoming known for it’s water birds, and access to this facility could be organized through the Healthy Alternative at 034-3152273.
