Birdwatching and Hiking Near Ixopo

If you're the adventurous sort, there are a number of waterfalls located along the Mzimkhulu, Mkomazi and Mtwalume rivers. Hikes and trails to the Cooper Falls, the Marriott Falls and three falls in the Hella-Hella valley can be organised. The falls vary in height from 90 m to 120 m and, as access is difficult, local directions - or guidance - is needed. There are Oribi to be seen on the farms, and other game for trophy hunters.

Birdwatching in the Ixopo area is a popular activity, as a wide variety of species are to be seen, with specials such as the rare blue swallow, red data species like the bald ibis and their breeding colony, the difficult Stanely buzzard, the invisible black trumped button quail and the magnificent crowned crane.

Hikes through indigenous areas such as the five hundred hectare Soada Forest Nature Reserve, which houses many species of antelopes and primates, and Xumeni Forest which is a cool mist-belt forest, inhabited by the highly endangered Cape Parrot, and other forest bird species such as Orange Ground Thrush. Mountain bike and horse and pony trails through the area can also be arranged for exciting outdoor family adventures.
