Cwebe Nature Reserve

The Cwebe Nature Reserve, located on the Eastern Cape's Wild coast, is a small and relatively newly established reserve, which exists to preserve the unique biodiversity of the coastal forests, the southern sourveld grassland type and the Marine Protected Area of the region, as well as serving as an important habitat for a number of collapsed fish stocks. The Cwebe reserve covers a total area of two thousand two hundred hectares, and consists of a number of habitats which feature a combination of coastal forest, open grassland, winding rivers and a diverse coastline. The reserve is separated from the neighbouring Dwesa reserve, by the Mbashe River.

The Cwebe Nature Reserve is an ideal destination for hiking, and houses a number of trails which lead through the lush forests which provide visitors with amazing views of the nearby Indian Ocean, and regular sightings of whales and dolphin. The reserve is relatively underdeveloped, except for the hiking trails, and a few 4x4 trails, which provide an excellent platform for viewing the magnificent wildlife which inhabits the reserve. Animal life in the Cwebe Nature Reserve includes red hartebeest, blesbok, blue wildebeest, buffalo, eland, warthog, crocodiles. An abundance of birdlife can also be seen at Cwebe, nearlly 300 species including amongst others Narina Trogon, Mangrove Kingfisher, Croaking Cisticola, and Crowned Crane, allow for above average bid watching opportunities.
