Tourist Junction (Durban Tourism Bereau)

NO COMMISSION SINCE 1998

Tourist Junction (Durban Tourism Bereau)

The main tourism centre for Durban, Tourist Junction is housed in the city's old railway station, a massive and imposing 19th century red brick building situated at 160 Monty Naicker (formerly Pine Street). The old station, a tourist attraction in its own right, has an interesting history, part of which includes the buildings roof. The roof was intended for a railway station in Toronto, Canada, but the architects in England mistakenly switched the plans, and so the roofs were switched too. Outside the old building stands a statue of Gandhi, who also played an important role in the history of both the city and the country. As one approaches the stately old building, they will also notice flags flying outside before they make their way to the marble entrance.

Tourist Junction, which can be found on the second floor houses a huge variety of maps and information regarding travel and tourism in southern Africa, as well as a knowledgeable team of consultants who await the questions of eager travellers and tourists. Here visitors can make use of the opportunity to browse through hundreds of leaflets which provide insight into various attractions and accommodation not only in Durban but throughout the rest of the province of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa.

Also located in the building, visitors will find numerous curio shops, interesting audio visual media and books for sale, and the offices of various associations which include KwaZulu Wildlife and National Parks Board reserves, a number of accommodation agencies, and the African Art Centre, packed full of skillfully crafted ethnic African artworks.
