Belhaven House, located in Barberton's Lee Road, is one of three restored
upper-middle class late Victorian/ Early Edwardian era homes in the historic
town. The house was built in 1904 by Scottish businessman George Nesbitt who
spared no expense in the building's construction. The grand old home which has
been furnished in the style of the era, was recently fully restored to its
former appearance, and now serves as a satellite of the Barberton museum, along
with an Anglo-Boer War blockhouse, and the Fernlea and Stopforth house museums.
The building is a pre-fabricated structure with corrugated iron exterior walls
and pressed iron panels on the inside. The home reminds visitors of the wealth
generated by the first discoveries of gold in the Barberton region during the
late 1800's and early 1900's. The Belhaven House Museum depicts the lifestyle of
a wealthy middle class family of the Victorian/ Edwardian Era and also houses
various interesting and informative displays on geology and mining, Swazi
history and general history of the Barberton area.
The museum is open to the public every day from 09:00 to 16:00, and offers
visitors guided tours every hour.. A small entrance fee of R10 for adults and R5
for children is asked, and this fee will also allow visitors access to the
Stopforth House museum, which houses a grocery store from the late 1800's.
