Khama Rhino Sanctuary

The 4300 ha Khama Rhino Sanctuary is one of Botswana's smaller game reserves, but it is the best destination in Botswana for spotting White Rhino. Situated roughly 20 km north of Serowe, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary was established in the late 1980's with intention of reintroducing White Rhino into Botswana.

The reserve is characterised mainly by Kalahari sandveld, and also features a number of waterholes which provide water for more than 30 other species of wildlife. More than 230 bird species have been spotted in the reserve, making it an ideal location for avid bird watchers.

Since its establishment the sanctuary has relocated 14 white rhino, and presently boasts a total population of 30 white rhino, plus two endangered black rhino. Other than preserving Botswana's white rhino population, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary also provides a habitat for a number of less common species in the region. These species, which have been reintroduced into the reserve, include Blue Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest Eland, Gemsbok, Springbok, Burchell's Zebra and Giraffe. Other species endemic to the region have flourished since the establishment of the reserve, and these species include Kudu, Steenbok and Common Duiker as well as a large variety of other smaller mammals such as porcupine, bat-eared fox, lynx and wild cat. Night drives through the Khama Rhino Sanctuary provides visitors with an excellent opportunity to view an interesting variety of nocturnal species such as leopard, Caracal, brown Hyena and Aardwolf.

The network of roads which run through the Khama Rhino Sanctuary are well maintained and sign-posted, allowing self-drive game viewing in either four or two wheel drive vehicles. Maps of the reserve are obtainable from the entrance gate, which also feature a pleasant picnic site with toilet and braai facilities nearby.

Other attractions at the Khama Rhino Reserve include Serowe Pan, a calcrete depression, located in the centre of the reserve, and a number of smaller pans dispersed throughout the park providing visitors with amazing photographic opportunities. Also featured is a traditional reed and thatch bird hide overlooking one of the small pans, which holds water all year round. This hide serves as an ideal location to view many of the more than 230 species which reside in the reserve.

Other popular activities at the Khama Rhino Reserve include a variety of scenic nature trails led by skilled and knowledgeable rangers. Another option available to visitors are the guided game drives which operate within the reserve, and take roughly two hours to complete.

The Khama Rhino Reserve also features an education center, which was constructed with the aim of introducing local children to various aspects of conservation and environmental awareness.
