Dyer Island Reserve - nr Gansbaai, Whale Coast

Dyer Island Reserve lies off the coast near Gansbaai in the Overberg and forms part of one of the Western Cape’s most important marine wildlife areas. The island and surrounding waters are particularly significant for seabirds and marine mammals, including African penguins, Cape fur seals and a variety of pelagic bird species. The waters around the island are also associated with whales, dolphins and great white sharks. Visitors cannot freely explore the island itself, but boat-based marine wildlife trips provide opportunities to view the island and its wildlife from the water. The reserve is also important for ongoing marine conservation and research.
