The Park is now home to 4 of the Big Five, the leopard having occurred naturally in the area whilst lions are still to be introduced once prey are numerous enough to sufficiently support them. Other species include the giraffe, hippo, impala, sable and tsessebe. Birdlife is prolific and Marakele is home to the largest breeding colony of Cape Vultures in the world.
