If you're passing through Kimberley and have a little extra time on your hands, you might consider paying a visit to the Vaalbos National Park. This quiet patch of Kalahari thornveld and grassveld was proclaimed a national park in 1986 to help protect the delicate ecosystem of the region. Camphor trees, the park's namesake, are common throughout much of the park.

A picnic / braai area is provided along the Vaal River where one can enjoy the landscape of the surrounding grassveld.

A number of large game have been introduced to the park, including buffalo, both white and black rhino, kudu, eland, and he rare roan antelope.

Birders may wish to visit the Block Dam where many of the park's 180 recorded species may be found.
