The Karoo National Park was established to preserve the spectacular
scenery and restore the flora and fauna to it's natural state. Animals that were once endemic were reintroduced to the area.
Currently, the Park accommodates 64 mammal species which include the African wild cat, and the bat-eared fox. Over 190 species of birds are present and 59 species of reptile. There are a number of Hiking Trails which includes The Fossil Trail, the Karoo being one of the richest areas world wide for reptile fossils.
