The Gamkaberg is an isolated mountain plateau located in the Klein Karoo halfway between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges.
It consists of a relatively flat mountain plateau, covered with mountain fynbos. Succulent Karoo dominate the drier veld below. Between these two extremes riverine vegetation is found in the deep gorges that cut through the mountain.
The 2-day 24 km Oukraal Hiking Trail begins in the veld and works it's way up through a gorge to the mountain top. Hikers spend the night in a primitive stone shelter. Reservations for the trail are arranged through the CapeNature office in George at (044) 802 5310.
The mountain can also be explored by taking the Zebra Crossing 4x4 Route which takes about 3 to 4 hours round trip.
Note, these trails are only available to overnight guests. shorter walks are available at the information centre for day visitors.
