The Oceanarium in Port Elizabeth has one of the biggest and best dolphinariums in the world.
The enclosure, Dolphin Lake, is about 60 m in length and contains nearly 5
million litres of seawater.
The dolphin show has been delighting visitors young and old, for nearly 50 years. It's two main inhabitants, Dumisa and Domino, are a pair of bottlenose dolphins that provide endless entertainment with their underwater activities, which can be viewed from the underwater observation area.
Although the dolphinarium is primarily known as a major tourist attraction, the decades of study and research into bottlenose dolphins carried out by the oceanarium have contributed significantly to our knowledge and understanding of these
fascinating and intelligent creatures.
The oceanarium also has a small breeding colony of penguins and another pool with Cape fur seals and
Antarctic seals.
Other fish tanks house sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, and many other interesting creatures found in the Indian Ocean off South Africa's coastline.
