The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is located near Heidelberg just off the N3 highway, about one hour's drive from Johannesburg. The reserve can be explored either by foot, mountain bike, or motor vehicle.

Hiking is permitted throughout the reserve, and is the best way to view the variety of antelope and many other smaller herbivores.

TRAILS:
The 4km Cheetah Trail has interpretive signage oriented towards environmental issues. The Bokmakierie Hiking Trail covers either 10 km or 17 km depending on the route chosen. The reserve also has various overnight hiking trails with about 6 different huts. Permits and keys to the huts are available at the Information Centre. All huts have lighting, beds with mattresses, solar powered showers. and braai areas.

The reserve has about 60 km of paved roads including a braai area with running water and toilets.

Mammals: baboon, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, zebra, and Hyena
Vegetation: highveld grassland with wooded ravines

DIRECTIONS TO SUIKERBOSRAND NATURE RESERVE:
- from Johannesburg follow the N3 to Heidelburg
- exit at the R23 and turn right (southward)
- Suikerbosrand is on the right
