Donkin Heritage Trail

The best way to explore the cultural history of Port Elizabeth is to take a stroll along the 5 km Donkin Heritage Trail. A map of this trail may be purchased from the tourist office located in the lighthouse located at the Donkin Reserve. This map marks the location of 47 landmarks located within the Old Hill area. The lighthouse itself, built in 1861 is one of these historical treasures.

The stone pyramid beside the lighthouse was erected by Sir Rufane Donkin, governor of the Cape, in memory of his young wife, Elizabeth for whom the city was named.

Nearby, the Campanile was erected to commemorate the arrival of the Settlers of 1820. A 200 step ascent to the top will reward your efforts with a beautiful view across the harbour, and will allow you to get a bird's eye view of the surrounding area.

The Port Elizabeth City Hall, completed in 1862 is just one of the many impressive architectural treasures to be found on the trail. The route also has many fine examples of Victorian architecture.

The No. 7 Castle Hill Museum is a Settler home built in 1829 that reflects a typical middle-class Port Elizabeth family in the early 19th century. Open Mon-Fri, 9h00 - 13h00 and 14h00-16h00.

The South End Museum captures the spirit of Port Elizabeth's infamous South End during the early 20th century up to the 1960's when the area was razed to the ground under the Apartheid regime's Group Areas Act. Cnr. Humewood Rd and Walmer Blvd.

The Horse Memorial was built to recognise and honour the horses and mules that died during the 2nd Boer War
