KAMBRO COTTAGE
Self Catering Flatlet Accommodation
in Graaff-Reinet, Western Region,
Eastern Cape, South Africa
Your host, Greg invites you to experience the history, nature and beauty of
Graaff Reinet while staying at Kambro Cottage; his little refuge in the Karoo.
Kambro Cottage is centrally located in the historical section of town, away from
the hustle and bustle, yet within walking distance to shops, banks, restaurants,
the museum complex and the famous Dutch Reformed "Grootkerk". It is surrounded
by numerous examples of Karoo style architecture which are reminders of a bygone
era.
Kambro Cottage is named after the watery flesh of an ancient, edible,
potato-like bulb that was loved by early indigenous Karoo dwellers. History
states that when the settlers came they too learned to enjoy the Kambro. Many
said the flesh of this tuber tasted like "spring water on a hot, dry, dusty day.
It was also described by many as "the white watery gold of the Karoo."
Kambro Cottage is a single-story, flat-roofed dwelling built in 1840. It is a
National Monument and is an intrinsic part of the town's history.
We hope, that just like those early Karoo dwellers, you will find Kambro Cottage
a refreshing surprise, offering you the chance to relax in a safe and private
atmosphere as well as explore the town at your own leisure.
