In
Sutherland, the coldest place in South Africa,you get the warmest welcome by your hosts Rita and Jurgens Wagener at their 4 star guesthouse, called Kambro kind. Kambro is a veldfood one gets in the Karoo and can survive very harsh conditions. There is also the book of famous South African writer, F.A. Venter of the same name.
Only 350km from Cape Town on a tarred road, brings you to this jewel of the Karoo with reason called: Gateway to the Universe!
The B&B are fully equiped with 8 en-suite rooms, living room with DStv, fireplace, Universe room with many books, magazines about astronomy, "Die Tolhuis" is an outside fully sheltered braai with DStv, fridge, micowave, hotplate, crockery and cutlery to be used by any visitor. Safe parking is available with 5 carports.
Each room has an oil heater, electric blankets, heaters in the bathroom, linen and towels, soap, shampoo, hairdryer.
Internet Cafe facilities are available.
In 2004 we were a semi finalist in the prestigeous AA guesthouse (large
style) of the year and in 2005, a finalist - an award of which we are justified proud!
From 10h00 to 15h00 on weekdays and from 10h00 to 14h00 on Saturdays, one can enjoy a light meal at the well known coffee shop: "Halley se kom eet" (Halley's comet).
Dinner is always by candlelight at 19h00 and we are licensed to sell wine and beer.
To end off an evening,one can see the stars or planets through an 8 inch (200 mm) computer telescope.
Other things to do:
- Visit the now famous Observatory with SALT (South African Large Telescope)
- Visit the first sheep cheese farm in South Afica marketing under the name Terranova.
- Visit Salpeterkop, the last working volcanoe south of the equator in Afica some 66 million years ago. Seismologic the Japanese found that Sutherland and this area are the quitest in the world!!!
- Visit the Radar Directional beacon for aircraft on one of the highest koppies in the area where you get a 360 degree view of the area.
- Do a scenic route towards the Ouberg pass on the escarpment and see how the road winds down some 1000 meters below. Watch the Cederberg mountains on the horizon.
- A succulent route was developed over a distance of 145 km with 22 stop over points identifying 105 succulent plants, each marked with GPS coordinates. Best time for this outing is mid July to end of October.
Children 12 years+ are welcome.
