Ketelfontein is situated 15 kilometers north of Colesberg on the R369 tar
road en route to Petrusville. The farm covers a periphery of 4000 hectares and
farming continues actively, with merino sheep and drakensberger cattle. To make
things easier the farm is divided into smaller camps and horses are used for
this purpose.
History
The first Vorster set foot in Cape Town in 1717. After many decades they
established themselves in the vicinity of Colesberg and Ketelfontein was shortly
registered in 1836. After six generations the farm is still the property of the
original Vorster family. Farming in the early days were only for self
preservation and consisted of vegetables, fruit, mealies, dairy products and
mampoer. Ketelfontein's name is derived from the brandy-still used to still
mampoer.
In 1999 we decided to share all this historical inheritance with the public. All
the bedrooms are en suite and the character of the house was kept by furnishing
all the rooms and public areas with genuine antique furniture, some inherited
from the Vorster family.
Guests can experience the peacefulness of the farm while sitting on the stoep.
Go for a swim in the swimming pool, or for a walk up to the dam leading them
through shady trees where arum lilies grow naturally in the fountain. The
hillock behind the farm house gives one a beautiful view of the farm and the
karoo. One can also find a huge variety of fauna and flora on these hiking
trails.
During the winter months one would rather stay indoors, snuggle up in front of
the fireplace and read a book part of a huge collection.

reminds me of my grandfather's farm."

Die plaas Ketelfontein is geleë 15 km noord van Colesberg op die
Petrusville pad (R369) Ketelfontein beslaan 'n oppervlakte van 3697 hektaar en
daar word vandag aktief met merino skape en drakensberger beeste geboer. Die
plaas is in kleiner kampe verdeel om bestuur makliker te maak. Perde word ook
gebruik vir hierdie doel.
Geskiedenis
Die eerste Vorster het in 1717 in Kaapstad aangekom. Na etlike dekades het hulle
hul kom vestig in Colesberg omgewing. Ketelfontein is in 1836 geregistreer en is
sederdien na ses geslagte nog steeds die eiendom van die oorspronklike Vorster
familie. Die mense wat destyds hier gewoon het, het alles self verbou wat hulle
nodig gehad het soos groente, vrugte, koring,mieleis, suiwelprodukte, vleis en
ook mampoer. Die naam Ketelfontein is dan ook afgelei van die stookketel wat op
die plaas was om mampoer te stook.
Vir die gaste: In 1999 is besluit om hierdie geskiedkundige erfenis met die
publiek te deel. Die huis is vandag met slegs antike meubels gemubuleer (sommige
van die oorspronklike familie). Gaste kan nog steeds rustig op die voorstoep sit
en die rustige omgewing ervaar.
