LAGOON COTTAGES
Self Catering Cottage Accommodation
in Walvis Bay, Central Region,
Namibia, Africa
Walvis Bay is situated on the Namibian coast, halfway between
the Kunene
River in the North and the Orange River in the South and nestles
between the
rich northward flowing Beguile current and the oldest desert on
earth, the
Nimbi. The
Namib is famous for the space, silence, unique insects, reptiles
and animals and
the fascinating welwitschia, one of botany's miracles. The
Walvis Bay lagoon is
one of the most important wetlands in Africa and harbors
numerous species of
birds of which the flamingos are the most plentiful and
noisiest.
The British established the port of Walvis Bay, the more
important of the two
Namibian harbors, in the nineteenth century as a whaling
station. The whales are
only now beginning to return but the seals and dolphins which
inhabit the coast
are only too eager to welcome visitors and may be viewed from
the decks of the
pleasure boats that daily take holiday makers out to sea.
Due to the cold Benguela current meeting the warm air of the
desert, Walvis Bay
often experiences misty days and especially the mornings can
have a wonderful
atmosphere. Even during winter the east wind, blowing across the
desert, can
bring delightful warm days and nights to the town.
Yachtsmen, board sailors, quad bikers, golfers and fishermen are
catered for,
while the idle will find solace in the walks along the lagoon,
the pristine
shores, the beautiful vistas, fresh air, peace, time to think
and space in which
to relax.
It must however, be remembered that the desert, like the ocean
is unforgiving
towards the inexperienced, the ill equipped and the reckless and
should not be
challenged without the necessary preparations and knowledge.
The two self-catering cottages are fully equipped and
tastefully furnished by
well-known artist and owner, Trudie Dicks. Each cottage has an
inside fireplace,
one lock-up garage, a private garden and situated in the lush
gardens of the
Flamingo Bay Cottages complex.
